Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen. He is known for his seminal investigations on sugar preference and the pathways linking the intestine to the brain dopamine system. Current research includes characterising the mechanisms by which psychological states generated in stress-related brain circuits impact on gastrointestinal mucosal immunity via altered vagal patterns.
