Sophie Ugolini is a Research Director at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and leads the "Neural Regulation of Immunity" Laboratory at the Centre d’Immunologie de Marseille-Luminy (CIML) in France. Her research explores the regulatory mechanisms that strengthen antimicrobial and antitumor immunity while minimizing excessive inflammation and tissue damage. She has investigated these processes across molecular and systemic levels in both humans and mice, with a focus on innate immune cells such as natural killer cells, neutrophils, and macrophages. More recently, her work has expanded to uncover the intricate interplay between the nervous and immune systems. Her team has identified novel neuroimmune pathways that play a key role in controlling infectious diseases, inflammation, and tissue repair, highlighting the contributions of both the peripheral and central nervous systems in modulating immune responses. These findings open promising avenues for therapeutic innovation.

Sophie Ugolini’s contributions have received recognition through numerous prestigious awards, including the “Duquesne Award” from the Ligue Nationale Contre le Cancer, the INSERM “Research Prize,” and the “Dandrimont-Bénicourt Award” from the Institut de France. Her laboratory has also secured significant funding, notably from the European Research Council (ERC) and the Bettencourt-Schueller Foundation (Impulscience grant).
